Language is the most challenging thing when we date with the people from other countries. Of course, there are many couples who doesn’t have any problems in their languages. Since I moved to Europe, I was very amazed that the most of the people from European countries speak good English especially in big city like Amsterdam. But this is not the case all the time. Especially as Japanese is very far from language from English, most of us, Japanese have a hard time to acquire English. Sometimes, I encounter people which I cannot understand their English even though I live overseas more than 10 years. I had a few dates with a German guy. He taught at university in the Netherlands so he speaks English perfectly. However I couldn’t understand what he talked about. So whenever I met him, I couldn’t enjoy with him. I was wondering why I couldn’t understand his English. I found that we had few things in common. Even the music he liked, I had never heard about his favorite bands. He is a quite geek. This was the most biggest barrier to understand each other. If we share many common things in hobbies, life style etc, it is quite easy to understand what we talk about even in English. So a language is important to communicate each other but it is more important to meet the people who share many common things.
